Requests for support and needs for day care - approximately 80 orphans:

1. Day Care Center
We would like to provide a place of refuge for the children where they can come and enjoy their meals and listen to teachings. Currently, there exists a foundation from an old shed on which we would like to build. This large structure can also be used for skills training and church meetings on Sundays. The total cost is $11,000.

2. Garden Supplies
Grace has land situated next to a water source, which is ideal for gardening. The only expenses are the seeds, hoes and watering buckets. We feel 10 of each will be plenty. The cost will be $200.

3. School Necessities
We will be sending the children to public schools where the school fees are funded by the government. A child will receive 2 pencils, 2 exercise books, soap for washing clothes and bathing each term; and 2 sets of clothes per year. The cost per child is $15.

4. Day Care Coordinator / Village Father
This whole undertaking will require staff. A male Malawian teacher and/or pastor responsible for overseeing the entire daycare project will be necessary. His duties include teaching the orphans, monitoring their school progress, tutoring, and interviewing for new orphans. He will also serve as the key disciplinarian. For the first five years of his term, he will require support. Our goal is that at the end of these five years, he will then be supported by Grace. His monthly salary is $50.

5. Food
The Malawian staple food is maize (corn). This always has an accompanying relish of fish, vegetable, or beans along with extra eggs, peanuts and oil for diet needs. The cost of feeding one day care orphan for a month is $10.

6. Medicine
It is difficult to determine the costs of medical treatment for each child. It is important to have a budgeted category for these needs, as much of the donated medicine is continually expiring. We do know that any funds for malaria treatment would be very important. One treatment for an individual is $5.

7. Cook
The children will eat 5 times a week, once a day. For this, a Malawian whose basic duties include preparation and distributing the afternoon meal will be required. Her monthly salary is $10.

Facts about Orphaned Children in Africa

Parentless children are traditionally cared for by family guardians

Boys inherit their fathers land and therefore guardians subject them to slave labor and malnutrition to hasten their deaths thus leaving the land to the guardian

Girls are of no importance other than that of sexual value to their guardians

To free themselves of the burden of girls, the guardians traditionally marry them off as soon as possible – as young as 12

The dowry system involves the exchange of cows and goats for each bride – consequently their husbands are usually elderly and polygamists
